In-Office Breast Ultrasound

Real-Time Imaging Right in Clinic
At our practice, we are able to perform breast ultrasound directly in the clinic as part of your evaluation. This allows us to quickly and comfortably assess palpable lumps and other findings using sound waves, without radiation or the need for outside testing when appropriate.
Breast ultrasound is a highly useful tool for distinguishing between solid masses and fluid-filled cysts, assessing benign changes, and guiding decisions about further care.
What Breast Ultrasound Can Do
Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging modality that provides real-time visualization of breast tissue and can be especially helpful in the following clinical situations:
1. Evaluating Palpable Masses
-
When you or your clinician feels a lump in the breast, ultrasound allows us to visualize the area immediately.
-
Many palpable lumps turn out to be simple cysts, which can often be monitored or, if appropriate, drained in clinic.
2. Characterizing Benign Findings
-
Certain masses, such as fibroadenomas, have characteristic features on ultrasound that allow for safe follow-up rather than immediate intervention.
-
These benign masses can be monitored over time in a cost-effective and convenient way without repeated trip to a breast imaging center.
3. Confirming Normal Tissue in Problem Areas
-
Ultrasound is useful when a precise evaluation is needed after a clinical breast exam or when mammography results need further clarification in dense breast tissue.
Why In-Office Ultrasound Matters
Having ultrasound capability in the clinic provides several advantages:
-
Immediate answers when a lump is felt, often in the same visit
-
Avoids unnecessary trips to an outside imaging center when appropriate
-
Saves time and cost for simple benign findings that do not require advanced imaging
-
Facilitates shared decision-making with you in real time
Ultrasound lets us personalize your care efficiently and compassionately.
When Further Imaging Is Still Needed
-
While bedside ultrasound is valuable, there are times when additional imaging is recommended:
-
If the breast finding is not well visualized with ultrasound alone
-
If microcalcifications or other mammographic abnormalities are present
-
If ultrasound raises a concern that warrants comprehensive evaluation at a breast imaging center
-
In such cases, we coordinate directly with the breast diagnostic team to ensure you receive the appropriate follow-up.
